Awhile ago I shared that my oldest would be starting Kindergarten in the fall. Hard to believe that day is almost here!
Well, I will be teaching him at home and have been working very hard these last couple of months to convert my unused dining room into an inviting classroom. I boxed up all the dishes and linens, took everything off the walls, sold the ornate dining room chandelier, and moved out all the furniture. I actually found another spot for my piano and was able to move that out too. So, I had a completely blank slate to work with!
And now for the reveal – my finished classroom…. I LOVE everything about it!
We choose a soothing paint color: Behr Natural Gray. We picked out the Maxwell Glider style chairs in Slate Gray (from Babies R Us actually). There wasn’t enough space for traditional recliners – these very comfortable, yet compact gliders are just the right size and were on sale – a perfect combination 🙂
We replaced the ornate, iron chandelier with this crisp, white drum pendant from Destination Lighting. I highly recommend this company if you are in the market for a light fixture – the customer service was outstanding. (My first pendant arrived with a damaged diffuser and they overnighted a replacement!)
I am so happy with the high gloss, gray picture frames I found at Ikea. The small ones were only $2.99 and the large ones $6.99. I might just have to go back and get more for the playroom! I used the large ones for 6 month prints of my boys (just paid shipping thanks to a free gift offer from Shutterfly!) and the smaller ones for some quote prints from Hope Ink.
Also from Ikea, I love these basic, white floating LACK shelves. Bonus, the concealed mounting hardware makes them look so clean and modern!
I moved my desk (used to be in the playroom) down into our classroom. It has TONS of storage. I’m able to keep so much of our curriculum, school supplies, plus my office files and junk drawer. But I also cleaned out a few of the cabinets and drawers in my adjoining butlers pantry to make room for the rest of the school supplies and my printer)
I was very lucky – both of my boys received a Brighton Desk by Kidcraft from my parents for their 3rd birthday. Each desk is gray (slightly different shades since they were purchased 2.5 years apart) and I paired them with a lime green Avalon Chair also by Kidcraft.
My final purchase for the classroom was this super Moroccan Trellis Shag Rug I found at Rugs USA for 70% off (and that summer promotion is still going!) This rug is so soft and plush – we all love to sit on it, especially my littlest guy…
School won’t be starting for a few more weeks, but we have already spent so much time in this room coloring, painting, doing Snap Circuits, reading, and even building forts.
I am so thankful for my new classroom! And I’m also thankful for my mom’s design ideas and for my husband’s hard work making it come together – in his “spare time” he painted, installed wood trim around the windows, hung all the shelves and pictures, and installed the new light fixture!
And now, my soon-to-be Kindergartner and I just have to wait patiently for a few more weeks – before the learning can officially begin 🙂
(Also: keep an eye out for my next post on our classroom, where I share some of my favorite ideas for keeping the boys school and craft supplies organized and out of the way!)
